Q: | What's with the hand being crushed in the gears thing? |
TC: | That was the punchline in a comic strip entitled "Jokes for the Deaf" from the humor magazine I edited in college. It caused paroxysms of uncontrollable laughter for hours. It has been one of my favorite images for years. |
Q: | And what exactly is an 'Ether Frolic' anyway? |
TC: | Ether, as you probably know, is a general anesthetic which,
if used sparingly, can be used in a recreational fashion.
In the earlier portion of this century, before what we
consider more traditional drugs of abuse like ScotchGuard (TM)
were generally available, Ether was a favorite among American
college students and the like. One of the colloquialisms
used relating to the phenomenon was an "Ether Frolic," used
in much the same way as one uses an acid 'trip' or 'strung out
on' heroin. |
TC: | Before you even ask the next question, no, I have never been
on an "Ether Frolic" nor would I given the opportunity. I
simply am amused by the concept. |
Q: | Why does the vocal in 'Hypocritic Voice' sound like it's coming
out of an AM radio? |
TC: | That was the intention. Cool, huh? |
Q: | Who are your influences? |
TC: | I suppose the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, The Beatles and XTC. Crosby, Stills and Nash, David Bowie and vintage Bee Gees would also be reasonable answers. There are other bands whom I absolutely adore like Phish, King Crimson, vintage Genesis, Steely Dan, Robyn Hitchcock and Thomas Dolby but my music bears absolutely no resemblance to these and such are hard to consider 'influences.' |
Q: | Why do you sell your music online? Couldn't you get signed at some label? |
TC: | Actually, I haven't made any effort whatsoever to interest a record company in my music. It's not that I don't want everyone on the planet to love my music and revere me, it's just that I don't particularly need that. I already have a profession which I'm very happy with and couldn't spare the time it would take to make it work. If someone approached me to 'sign' or something like that, I don't know what I would do or say. I won't 'tour' or otherwise actively promote my music so I don't think anyone would be interested. The reason I sell it online is I believe I write good music and think it should at least be inexpensively available to people who are interested in hearing music by someone who loves music. |
